We are NGR Accountancy

An accountancy service that was set up with one aim… to take away the stress and hassle of accountancy services from our clients.

After working for over ten years with a traditional accountancy practice our founder, Neil, realised that most small businesses weren’t getting what they really wanted from their accountant, someone who would take care of all the numbers for them and leave them with more time to get on with the important job of running their business.

From the very beginning Neil set up NGR Accountancy from the point of view of the client, constantly asking the question “What do small business owners and self employed people want from their accountant?”

Neil first became interested in accounting when he studied it at Brae High School in Shetland. After completing high school he worked in various jobs for a few years before leaving Shetland to study Business Economics at University in Edinburgh. After graduating he returned home to Shetland.

Neil started working as an accounts assistant in 2006 in the audit department of a national firm of accountants. He began training as a Chartered Certified accountant with the ACCA in 2007.

After qualifying in 2010 he continued to work for the same accountancy practice gaining a wide range of experience while working closely with a diverse range of businesses both on and off Shetland. In 2013 Neil left the accountancy practice to move into industry taking up the role of Financial Controller with a local building firm. Since then he has also worked in Chief Finance Officer and Executive Manager roles gaining a wide range of experience in the all aspects of running a business and the unique challenges of running a business in Shetland.

In summer 2018 Neil set up NGR Accountancy. He wanted to create the type of accountancy practice he would like to use as a business owner / manager, a practice where the client got a level of service that was tailored to their needs. He felt he could use his knowledge and experience to help every single client. He has the aim of growing and developing a firm that builds the relationship with each individual client that suits them. He has found from experience that some business owners / managers are comfortable with running most areas of their accounting and management functions but would like occasional advice and help or perhaps just reassurance, while others would like to hand everything over to their accountant / bookkeeper so they can get on with what they’re good at.
